How GST is calculated

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a percentage added on top of the price of most goods and services in India. The common rates are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, depending on the item.

Adding GST

If you have a price before tax, the GST amount is simply that price multiplied by the rate. For example, ₹1,000 at 18% GST adds ₹180, making the total ₹1,180. This calculator does that instantly and also splits the ₹180 into CGST and SGST.

Removing GST (reverse GST)

Sometimes you have the final price that already includes GST and want to know the original amount. You can't just subtract the percentage — you divide. For ₹1,180 including 18% GST, the base is ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, and the GST portion is ₹180. Switch to "Remove GST" above to do this.

CGST, SGST and IGST

For a sale within the same state, the total GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state) — so 18% becomes 9% + 9%. For a sale between different states, it's charged as a single IGST at the full rate instead.

GST calculator — common questions

What are the GST rate slabs in India?+

The main GST slabs are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Essentials often fall in lower slabs or are exempt, while luxury and "sin" goods sit at 28%. The right rate depends on the specific good or service.

How do I remove GST from a total price?+

Divide the total by (1 + rate/100). For 18%, divide by 1.18. The result is the base price, and the difference is the GST. Use the "Remove GST" mode above to do it automatically.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?+

For sales within a state, GST is split into CGST (central government) and SGST (state government), each half the total rate. For sales across states, a single IGST is charged at the full rate.
